In 1832, after the Black Hawk War had ended, the Village of Lisle was first settled by two brothers named James and Luther Hatch. Both brothers began a farming community and soon after other pioneers came to the area attracted by the prime timber, fertile land, and water resources.
The community slowly expanded and by 1839 DuPage County was established and was set apart from Cook County. Residents in 1850 voted to create a township government, dividing the County area into nine townships and making Lisle Township the south central village. The Burlington and Quincy Railroad company from Chicago in 1864 built the first tracks to Chicago to Aurora with a stop in Lisle.
Over the next several decades, the Lisle Township grew gradually but remained a small a community. Electricity was introduced to the Lisle community in the early 1920s, followed by improved telephone services in the 1940s.
Lisle is home to the Morton Arboretum which was named after the founder of Morton Salt Company, Joy Morton, who donated a portion of his land to help build the botanical garden and preserve the area’s native woodlands.
The Village of Lisle was officially incorporated in 1956 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006.
